A Smidgen too much Yoga

I love yoga. I talk about it all the time. I try to make people go with me and experience the all the joys yoga has to offer. But friends, I’m sad to say that going to three advanced yoga classes in one week is just a little too much. Yesterday was YYN’s  6th birthday, and I went to a free class in honor of their birthday. Well, Charlie, my hatha flow teacher for the morning had us holding strength postures forever, bascially I was in a lunge for an hour straight, followed by some very deep knee bends for about half an hour. Today, my hip flexors are so out of whack, that I can barely walk, and we won’t even talk about the kind of pain my fanny is in. I slept lying on top of the corn bag last night, and that seemed to help a little, but as soon as a crawled into bed I could tell I would be sore this morning. I know that all serious yogis are supposed to practice 6 days a week, and I really do try to get a little practice in each day, but 3 classes is just one too many, and my body seems to agree with me. Hopefully eating some Juan in a Millions this morning with help my aching back and hips. I’m not sure how that would help, but it certainly can’t hurt.

Kathryn Alfredson and the Case of the Purple Glitter Undies

This past weekend I was in Victorias Secret shopping for nothing in particular. I came across a cute little hot pink cami top, and decided to get it with some matching undies. Well, VS has a long history of being a total rip off, so they, of course, were running a special. Buy one pair of over-priced under-pants for $14 or get 3 for a slightly more reasonable, yet still grossly inflated $25. So I bought three. A pink pair to match, a purple and pink polka dot pair, and a pair of purple ones with little glittery dots on them. Cute enough for underwear. I’ll take them.

So Monday rolls around, and to me, nothing says, "It’s Monday!" quite like a fresh new pair of drawers. So I don the purple sparkly ones and set off on my way. But, the strangest thing happened: all day long, I kept noticing, surprise surprise, purple glitter all over the place! It was in the carpet, on my chair, on tax returns…and basically just all over the place. I think the problem was that I was wearing said underpants with a loose pair of pants, which kind of promoted the shedding of purple glitter.

Thankfully no one mentioned anything, because I would have been in the precarious position of having to think up an excuse why purple glitter was coming out of my pants. I think we’ve all learned an important lesson here. What that lesson is, I’m not sure, but there is one…and it’s good.

Movie Review: Flags of our Fathers

This weekend once again brought us to the Alamo Draft House to see Flags of our Fathers. This was a good movie. Clint Eastwood doesn’t make bad movies, he’s far too leathery. I thought this was a great film with a great storyline. The Battle of Iwo Jima is not something I really knew a lot about going into this movie, and I knew nothing of the men who raised the flag, so not only was this an interesting piece of history, but a very good bit of story telling. The actual battle is intertwined with the live’s of the men shortly after the battle as they become "heroes" that sell war bonds and their adult lives well after the war. Throughout the movie, we learn that being a hero is more than it’s cracked up to be, and the surviving flag raisers become jaded with being celebrities and live with a lot of regret.

It was a really touching movie and it had quite a good story and moral to tell. It’s not too gory, although it has it’s moments, so don’t be worried about that. It was a war, and war isn’t entirely pleasant. I would recommend it, good acting by a young cast, especially Ryan Phillippe and Adam Beach. The scripting was simple and effective, with most of the nuance and depth going to Adam Beach’s character Ira Hayes. Ira is a native american, and the whole time he is referred to as Chief, or something else incredibly innane. I have no doubt he was called that, but Eastwood made it a central theme.

I’d recommed this movie probably mostly to people our parents age. We don’t have a grasp of these events in our current memories, and it was most likely our grandfathers who fought in that war. If they shared their stories with you than you are lucky. The central themes are ageless, but overall, I would think this is yet another Eastwood film geared towards the babyboomer generation. A good film, add it to your netflix queue if you don’t get a chance to see it in the theatre.

Did anyone see Marie Antoinette? I want to see it, but I’m not sure I to since it got bad reviews. Let me know.
