The Number 23

Some of you may know that 32 is my lucky number. That’s why my screen name is freeway323…I also like palindromes. 32 is my lucky number, and always has been because I always seemed to notice that it shows up everywhere. It’s a very common number…so is 23, thus the palindrome. So I was very curious about the movie, starring Jim Carrey called The Number 23. Josh and I saw it last night, and it did not disappoint. This is not a great master of modern American film, but certainly it played into my fascination of the number 23. It was a great way to spend a Saturday evening, and match that up with the most delicious grilled cheese sandwich I’ve ever had and some tasty beers and I was quite pleased with how the night turned out.

The movie revolves around Walter Sparrow who is a dog catcher. After a particularly difficult dog eludes him, he’s late to meet his wife for a birthday dinner. One thing leads to another and paranoia sets in. I won’t go any further, but there are some pretty good plot twists that I didn’t see coming. Certainly a movie worth catching, if not in the theatres than in Netflix. After you get out of the movie, you might find yourself counting letters, or finding 2’s and 3’s in everyday things…it is rather spooky. Some might say that you could do the same with other numbers, and I’m sure you can…but 23 and 32 will always have a special place in my heart.

For all of you who might be thinking I am starting to resemble the characters in the film, I will have you know that Kathryn Louise Alfredson has only 22 letters in it.

That Darn Cat

Some of you know that I’ve made a new little friend lately…a little baby cat who seemed to have adopted my patio. Well, this little cat would come by a couple times a day, meow at my sliding glass door, look longingly up at me with it’s big kitty eyes and then scamper off. This has gone on for over two weeks. Finally I had to give in. God had put this little create on my doormat, and I didn’t feel I could leave it out in the cold, meowing up at me night after night. Finally, I come up with a plan. Josh and I have a very gracious pet-loving friend Sylvia who fosters pets from time to time. I contacted her and after several long email conversations we decided that I would capture the kitty, take it to a nearby vet and then bring it to her house to find a home. Easier said than done, I know. To entice Baby Cat to come to my window night after I night I started leaving food and water out for it. Maybe this is a good time in my narrative to say that I don’t really care for cats, and they don’t care for me. Additionally, in the spirit of full disclosure, I feel I should also say that I am horrifically allergic to cats and that is why I couldn’t simply let it in my house or adopt it myself…but I digress. So, I’m leaving honey nut cheerios out for the cat night after night…by cat food I meant food suitable for consumption by cats…not really cat food…and night after night the cat came back, ate the food and looked up at me with big cat eyes. So finally it was Friday night, and I was supposed to capture the cat and take it to the vet Saturday morning. I keep a close eye on my patio for any cat presence, and he comes by around 6. I open the door slowly…but cat jumps away…so I go out to find it. I think in doing so, I scared it a little bit, but I know it’s hungry so it will come back. Later that night he comes again, this time while Josh and I are watching a movie…I slowly open the door…but the cat runs away even faster this time. No luck at all. The rest of the night I spend with one eye looking out the window, but no kitty. I try again to capture him in the morning time, but alas no kitty.

I fear that in my pursuit to rescue this cat and find him a good home I accidentally terrified him and traumatized the poor thing for life. I haven’t seen him since, and his bowl of honey nut cheerios is still full. Maybe he wanted lucky charms, maybe he didn’t really want to spend a night in my bathroom…but at least I tried. If I see him again I’ll try to find him and get him a better home, but the general consensus seems to be that he is feral, and probably wouldn’t make a good pet to begin with. Too bad though, for someone who doesn’t like cats at all he was certainly a cute one.

Iguana Tongues

Iguana Tongue

From time to time, people ask me how Josh and I manage to keep our relationship going for longer than Windows Vista was in development. The answer is quite simple really…iguana tongues. Now you know.

thanks to todaysplanet.com for having the exact picture I needed.
